Red Stick, the. The death of a student from the University of the South of 20 years in Baton Rouge, Louisiana, is being investigated by the Local Police as a possible act of novatadas of fraternity, school authorities confirmed to The Associated Press on Wednesday.
Caleb Wilson, who died on February 27, was a mechanical engineering student at the University of the South and aANDM College and member of the famous music band of the school.
Foreign Minister John K. Pierre said in a shared statement about the University Facebook page that “it is believed that an incident outside the campus has contributed to the death of Caleb.” A University spokesman confirmed on Wednesday that an alleged ritual of fraternity is being investigated, which involves Omega Psi Phi.
Ricky L. Lewis, international president of Omega Psi Phi Fraternal, Inc., said in a written statement issued on Friday that the organization is aware that the authorities have “launched an investigation into this tragic incident, and completely support their efforts to seek the truth.”
“We recognize that many of you can have questions, and we are actively working to collect precise information,” Lewis said. It was not clear if Wilson was a member of the fraternity.
Additional details, including Wilson’s cause of death, were not yet available. Police in Baton Rouge have not commented on the investigation.
In a Wilson family statement, published by Wafb tv, The student was described as an “extraordinary person” who was a “brilliant and talented young man with a promising future in front of him.”
“We are committed to seeking the truth about the circumstances surrounding Caleb’s death and ensuring that no other family has to endure such a tragedy,” said the family.
Wilson was a trumpeter with the music band, known as the “human jukebox”, which recently played in the Super Bowl. In a statement on the band’s Facebook page, Wilson was described as a talented, dedicated and brilliant soul that “poured his passion” in his studies and music.
“His energy, spirit and impact on those around him will never be forgotten,” said the publication.
During the band’s performance in one of the Mardi Gras de New Orleans during the weekend, the members played “Love Light in Flight” by Stevie Wonder in honor of Wilson.
“This was more than an action, it was a tribute, a farewell and promise that Caleb’s legacy will live,” the band on Facebook published along with a video of the performance.
After Wilson’s death, the historically black university indefinitely stopped all the recruitment activities of the club, including those related to Greek life. On Tuesday, the university announced its own internal research and student judicial process in the “alleged novatadas incident.”
The university’s statement said that any organization on the campus that violates antihazas policies will face “rapid disciplinary sanctions.”
Southern University requires clubs and organizations to undergo antihaz training.
