Rome – The Italian National Olympic Committee has asked that sporting events be suspended on Saturday, The day of Pope Francis’s funeral.
After the Government declared five days of national mourning, the Olympic Committee, known for its Italian initials Coni, requested on Tuesday for Saturday events to be suspended and are a minute of silence in other sporting events.
The Pope, that died Monday at 88was A lifetime football fan.
Saturday’s events in Italy include three scheduled series A series A soccer games, one of them among the leader of the Inter Milan League and Rome.
It was not clear immediately if other league and cup soccer games scheduled in other days this week could also be affected.
All sporting events that had been scheduled for Monday in Italy were postponed after Francis’s death. That included four games from the series A that moved to Wednesday. The games in the country of origin of Pope Francis were also suspended.
