Nuuk, Greenland – The probably new Prime Minister of Greenland rejected on Wednesday the effort of US president Donald Trump to take control of the island, saying that Groenlanders should be allowed to decide his own future as he advances towards the independence of Denmark.
The demokraatit of Jens-Frederik Nielsen, a pro-negocios party that favors a slow path to independence, won a surprise victory in the parliamentary elections on Tuesday, surpassing the two leftist games that formed the last government. Since the majority of Greenlands oppose Trump’s Obertures, the campaign focused more on issues such as medical care and education than in geopolitics.
But on Wednesday, Nielsen hastened against Trump, who last week said A joint session of Congress that the United States needed Greenland to protect its own national security interests and hoped to obtain it “in one way or another.”
“We don’t want to be Americans. No, we don’t want to be Danish. We want to be Groenlanders, and we want our own independence in the future, ”said Nielsen, 33, Great Britain Sky News. “And we want to build our own country for ourselves.”
Greenland, an autonomous region of Denmark, has been in a Way to Independence Since at least 2009, when the government in Copenhagen recognized its right to self -determination according to international law. Four of the five main parties in the elections supported independence, although they did not agree on when and how to achieve it.
The island of 56,000 people, most indigenous Inuit environments, has attracted international attention since Trump announced his designs shortly after returning to the White House in January.
Trump focuses on Greenland because it extends to horcajadas on the strategic routes of air and sea in the North Atlantic and is home to the Pituffik Space Base of the United States, which supports the warning of missiles and spatial surveillance operations. Greenland also has large deposits of the RARE EARTH MINERALS I needed to do everything from mobile phones to renewable energy technology.
But Trump’s Oberturas were not on the ballot.
The 31 men and women chosen for Parliament on Tuesday will have to establish priorities for issues such as diversifying the economy of Greenland, building infrastructure and improving medical care, as well as shaping the country’s strategy to counteract the first agenda of President America.
Demokraatit won 29.9% of the votes by campaigning to improve housing and educational standards while delaying independence until Greenland is self -sufficient. Four years ago, the party ended in fourth place with 9.1%.
Nuuk resident, Anthon Nielsen said that the victory of the party would be good for the country.
“Most politicians want Greenland to be independent,” he said. “But this party he won, they don’t want to hurry things, so everything must do well.”
Carina Ren, director of the Arctic Program of the University of Aalborg in Copenhagen, said the results show that the Groenlandés tried to ignore Trump and focus on issues that were important to them.
“Voters have been able to drag all the drama, all alarmist conversations abroad to say: ‘Well, it’s about our daily lives, our daily concerns as citizens. Where are we going, how are we going to develop our society from the inside? ‘”
Now Demokraatit will have to focus your attention on forming a ruling coalition.
Naleraq, the most aggressive party in favor of independence, ended second, with 24.5% of the votes. It was followed by Inuit Ataqatigiit, who led the last government, with 21.4%.
“What approach to Independence will win the day will ultimately depend on whether Demokraatit decides to form a coalition government, and if so, with which party,” said Dwayne Menezes, managing director of the Initiative for Research and Polar Policy.
Nielsen seemed to be surprised by Demokraatit’s profits as the results arrived, with photos that show him wearing a big smile and applauding at a party after the elections.
He later said that Demokraatit would communicate with all other parties to negotiate the future political course of Greenland.
Danish defense minister Troels Lond Poulen congratulated Demokraatit and warned that the new Greenland government would probably have to “deal with Trump’s massive pressure.”
“It is not the case that you can participate in the Danish kingdom,” said Dr. Dr. Dr. “The future of Greenland is based on what the people and the Groenland government want.”
Greenland Prime Minister Mute Bourup Egede Last month he called the early elections, saying that the country should join for a “serious time” unlike anything Greenland has experienced.
On Wednesday, after the results were known, Egede used a Facebook post to thank the voters for having been and said that the parties were ready to resort to negotiations to form a government.
