Barcelona, Spain – The Real Madrid women’s team won the “classic” against the rival Barcelona for the first time on Sunday, ending a losing streak of 18 games.
Madrid prevailed 3-1 compared to more than 35,000 fans at the Montjuic stadium in Barcelona, with Caroline Weir scoring the decisive goals in the 87th minute and in the detention time. Alba Redondo had put Madrid ahead in 41 and Caroline Hansen matched the hosts in 67.
Barcelona protested after having a goal not allowed by a controversial offside in 82, when the score was 1-1.
The victory moved to Madrid four points from leader Barcelona after 23 rounds.
Barcelona has won the Spanish Women’s League during the last five seasons. Madrid was runner -up in the previous two seasons.
Madrid began its female team in 2020.
