Bo Nix has already turned 25. Michael Penix Jr. will arrive there in May.
Both quarterbacks were first round selections last year. They were among the 56 players 24 years or more recruited in 2024.
That number was greater than 54 in 2023, 44 in 2022, 16 in 2021 and 19 in 2020.
There have been more older perspectives written in recent years because the Covid-19 pandemic gave the players the option to remain in school an extra year. Although the window is finishing, the transfer portal and the null agreements could continue to keep some players at school for longer.
The teams used to avoid the oldest perspectives. The explorers and general managers once considered the age of 24 years in some cases.
But the success of boys like Nix and Jayden Daniels, who turned 24 during an excellent rookie season, shows that the experience can help players to have an immediate impact on professionals.
“I came from Byu, where children go to Misiones for a couple of years, and so people go: ‘Well, they are too old,” said the Chiefs coach Andy Reid. “Well, then they enter and do a pretty good job. So, and really, if you start taking racing averages, career duration, there may be a limit somewhere, but the races are not very long as it is. But we look (age), however,”.
The majority of older players selected in the Draft last year were selections of day 3, going in the sixth or seventh round. That indicates that the teams are more likely to ignore age later in the draft.
“It’s exclusive where we are now in the world of football,” said Raiders general manager John Spytek. “You really have the boys with sixth and seventh years, so you must talk about a value of whether we are going to have a problem with the 25 or 26 -year -old young man? Some people have more problems with that. I am only looking for good football players, and I am trying to impress that also in our explorers. We will find good soccer players. We resolve it. So I will say that it has been very difficult in the explorers in the area.
“You enter these schools such as Georgia and Michigan, Ohio State, and have a list of 30 types that can come out … I want to say that it used to be how these 10 juniors are here, maybe half of them come out. Now, it’s like, you have a fourth year amount, fifth year, and could take another year. Therefore, add many more names to the names and it is not more important that I had more important work and much more time. Of the Scouts are so critical to go through all that efficiently and present the players in the right way.
The number of major players written will decrease this season. There are 46 players of 23 years or more who are eligible in the Draft, including 17 that are 24 years or older.
The Louisville Campo Marshal, Tyler Shough, who turns 26 in September, was the oldest player in the exploration harvester. He spent seven years in three universities, including Oregon, where he supported Justin Herbert in 2019, and Texas Tech.
The open receptor of Tennessee, Bru McCoy, the San José state recipient Nick Nash and the Arkansas receiver, Andrew Armstrong, were among the 24 -year -old Draft prospects in the harvester.
The teams that adhere to the ancient philosophy of avoiding older players limit their group of talents.
“I think you sometimes have to ask yourself, are you trying to get this guy for 12 years? If you are looking for that, it is a small percentage,” said the general manager of the 49ers, John Lynch. “Or are you looking for a contract and then, hopefully? It is an interesting topic. It is one that we constantly discuss. There are advantages and real estate for both sides. Having a young boy who thinks you can develop and is already a good player, and then a guy who is a little more proven … bent a little more. It is an interesting conversation.”
The university experience is more valuable to quartbacks. Nix and Daniels demonstrated it last year when they took their teams to the playoffs. Meanwhile, Anthony Richardson launched only 393 passes in the university before the colts were drafted in general in 2023. He has fought to adapt to the NFL level.
The oldest player ever selected in the Draft was Field Marshal Chris Weinke. He was 28 years old and 264 days when the Panthers selected him in the fourth round of the 2000 draft. Weinke began only 20 games in the NFL, going 2-18.
Field Marshal Brandon Weeden was the oldest player ever recruited in the first round. He was 28 and 195 days when the Browns chose him 22 in general in 2012. Weeden did 25 openings, with 6-19. Both Weinke and Weeden played lower league baseball before university football.
Depending on the position of a player and the round, age can be a determining factor when a team chooses between two boys.
“When two players are level, even the same degree, you begin to weigh what they have,” said Chargers general manager Joe Hortiz, about age. “Ok, is a three -year headline and is a four -year -old headline. Great leader, team captain, those little things give them a lump. It is not intentional, but you speak it and shakes that way.”
