London and Pretoria – An American missionary who was allegedly kidnapped at gunpoint during a religious service in South Africa on Thursday night on Thursday night was rescued in “a high intensity shooting” several days later, South African police said Wednesday.
Three unidentified suspects were killed during Tuesday’s operation, which was directed by the Hawks Elite Hawks Unit of the South Africa Police Service, according to a statement from the spokesman Lieutenant Colonel Avele Fumba.
The researchers discovered that the kidnapped American citizen, who believes he was a shepherd in a church in the South African port of Gqeberha, was stopped in a safe house there, Fumba said. When the officers approached the house on Tuesday, the suspects inside a vehicle opened fire against the police and tried to flee the scene, Fumba said, “leading to a high intensity shooting in which three unidentified suspects were fatally injured.”
“The victim was found within the same vehicle from which the suspects had launched their attack,” Fumba added. “Milaculously unharmed, was immediately evaluated by medical staff and is currently in excellent condition.”
Police have not yet identified the American rescued by name. The investigation is still ongoing, according to Fumba.
