Memphis, Tenn. – A Tennessee gynecologist was arrested on Friday and accused of performing unnecessary procedures in patients with reused medical devices in unsanage conditions.
Dr. Sanjeev Kumar, 44, is accused of attracting four people to travel interesting to participate in illegal sexual activities, adulteration of medical devices, errrors of medical devices and medical care fraud, said the office of the United States prosecutor in Memphis.
The judicial records did not show whether Kumar has a lawyer to represent him for the charges or speak in his name. There was no immediate response to a telephone message that was left with his office.
Kumar’s medical practice is found in Memphis. From September 2019 to June 2024, it is alleged that Kumar has sexually abused women through unnecessary medical procedures with devices maintained in unhealthy and reused conditions in patients when they should be properly thrown or reprocessed.
Kumar did not tell the patients that he was reusing the devices, prosecutors said, and also invoiced Medicare and Medicaid as if the procedures were necessary and as if he had used a new or properly reprocessing device every time.
The United States prosecutor, Fondren said that Kumar was constantly the best paid supplier in Tennessee for Medicare and Medicaid for hysteroscopy biopsies, which allow doctors to look inside the uterus.
Federal authorities said there could be more patients affected by alleged Kumar acts.
“The accusations indicate that Kumar acted as a predator in a white coat and used the coverage to perform medical exams to put his patients at risk and enrich themselves,” Fondren said in a statement.
