Live updates of the Myanmar-Thailandia earthquake: more than 1,000 dead, authorities say

Garret Briere and his wife told ABC News that they could never have imagined that their first vacation in Thailand ended up being one of the most scary experiences of their lives.

The Washington state couple was in the mall on the other side of the street from the 34 -story building when they saw it implude and collide against the ground.

“We ran from the building because it began to tremble,” Garret said. “I took my wife’s hand and said: ‘Don’t let it go.’ Immediately, we were covered with dust and debris, and we couldn’t see, and there were thousands of people in panic.”

Only several seconds were needed for the entire building to be reduced to a pile of 7 -story debris, the couple said.
