The Ministry of Health of Türkiye says that Filiz Akin, a screen actress and iconic figure of Turkish cinema from the sixties and seventies, has died
Ankara, Türkiye – Filiz Akin, a screen actress and iconic Turkish cinema figure of the sixties and seventies, has died, said the Ministry of Health. She was 82 years old.
Akin died Saturday at a hospital in Istanbul. The cause of death was not specified.
“Filiz Akin, one of the rare gems of Turkish cinema, died in the hospital where he had been receiving treatment for some time,” said the ministry, added that the actress had left “unforgettable qualifications in the history of cinema.”
Together with Turkan Soray, Hulya Kocyigit and Fatma Girik, Akin was considered one of the four most emblematic actresses in the Turkish film industry that was known as “Yesilcam”, after the street in Estanbul, where film companies were based. Girik died in 2022.
Akin was born in Ankara on January 2, 1943. His trip to stardom began when he presented his photograph to a beauty contest organized by a magazine in 1962, encouraged by the mother of a high school friend.
She won the competition and caught the attention of Turkish producer and film director Memduh Un, who presented her to the world of cinema. He starred in more than 200 films between 1962 and 1975.
Her husband and a son, Ilker Inanoglu, who are also an actor survive.
The funeral arrangements did not meet immediately.
