Esther González scored a goal in each half and Gotham FC beat Angel City 4-0 in the National Women’s Soccer League on Friday night.
In another part of the NWSL, Seattle’s reign defeated the Portland Thorns 1-0 and Utah’s royals defeated the Chicago Stars 1-0.
González opened the scoring at Stadium BMO in Los Angeles with a shot from inside the box that bounced in the post in the 18th minute. He won his second of the night using his head to move in a corner shot of Sarah Schupansky in the 75th minute.
Gotham (2-2-1) had gone 2-0 in a goal by Miyabi Moriya after a Freak deflected the ball on Angel City, Angelina Anderson, in the 67th minute. Geyse scored her first NWSL goal in the 85th minute to put the 4-0.
Angel City fell to 2-2-1.
Maddie Dahlien scored his first professional goal to give the reign (2-1-2) the victory of Cascadia rivalry over the thorns.
It was Seattle’s first victory in the regular season over its regional rivals since 2021, a streak without victories of seven league games. Reign coach Laura Harvey celebrated on the sidelines after the final whistle in Lumen Field in Seattle.
The rookie Dahlien was played in the left wing by Lynn Biyendo, then cut inside and squeezed a low shot of Bella Bixby in the fourth minute. It was the assistance of the 31st regular season of Biyando’s career, which is more tied in NWSL’s history.
The front Reilyn Turner almost scored an equalizer for the thorns (1-2-2) when he hit the crossbar from a corner shot in the 90th minute.
Ally Sentnor turned a penalty into the tenth minute of the detention of the second half to give the real victory in America First Field in Sandy, Utah.
The referee initially stirred the game after Cari Rocarro cleared Dana Foederer in the box of the stars in the seventh minute of the detention time of the second half. However, after a VAR review, a foul was granted and Sentnor put the ball beyond the reach of goalkeeper Alyssa Naeher and towards the left corner of the goal.
Chicago (1-0-4) achieved his only shot in the goal when Leilanni Nesbeth hit a domesticated effort from outside the box in the 89th minute.
Victory is the real (1-1-3) first of the 2025 NWSL season.
